The second generation C-Class was introduced in March 2000 and production began on 18 July 2000. Testing began in 1997, with development concluding in 2000. Design patents were filed on 20 April 1998 and 4 March 1999. Design work commenced in mid-1994, with the final design being approved in December 1995 by the executive board. In 1994, development began on the W203 C-Class. Main article: Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W203) Pre-facelift Mercedes-Benz C180 K sedan Styling themes were carried over from the previous W201 series, but the new series had a smoother and rounder design than the last generation of compact Mercedes, with styling cues from the W124 E-Class (short, high trunk and taller tail lights), W140 S-Class (front end), and R129 SL-Class (headlights).ĭuring the 19 Formula 1 season, the C36 AMG served as the sport's Safety Car. The C-Class sedan was the company's entry-level model up until 1997 when Mercedes launched the A-Class. The first C-Class (W202) sedan was manufactured on 1 June 1993. In May 1993, the first generation W202 C-Class was introduced as a replacement for the 190. Rough prototypes went into testing in 1989, with first production design prototypes commencing trial in 1990. Design work began in 1987, with the final design by Murat Günak selected in 1989 and the production design by Olivier Boulay delayed in January 1990, finally being patented on 19 December 1990. In October 1986, three years into Mercedes-Benz 190 (W201)'s production run, work began on a successor. Main article: Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W202) Pre-facelift Mercedes-Benz W 202 sedan It remained in production until 2011 when a new W204 C-Class coupé replaced it for the 2012 model year. Initially available in sedan and a station wagon configurations, a fastback coupé (SportCoupé) variant followed and was later renamed to Mercedes-Benz CLC-Class. The third generation (W204) was launched in 2007 while the current W206 generation was launched in 2021. The C-Class has been available with a " 4MATIC" four-wheel drive option since 2002. Introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the 190 (W201) range, the C-Class was the smallest model in the marque's line-up until the W168 A-Class arrived in 1997. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a series of compact executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz Group AG. I have no doubt there is more hp out there, but the question is what do you want give up to make that happen.Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive ( 4MATIC) Those along with engine longevity, fuel economty and emissions. I am certain that factors like this went in to MB's decision on supercharger size, pully speed and boost pressure. So while you have high peak number the drivability sucks and turbo is so hugh it takes a long time to get spooled up. I have seen many 900 hp Toyota supra dyno charts where little power is made untill the last 1000 RPM before redline. The trick is to match the level of boost provided to maximize the shape of the power curve and the form of boost delievery. Smaller units in general need less RPM and cause less drag to produce boost pressure. That RPM peak is determined by the type of super charger and its size. So that they are really most efficient at a particular RPM. I know less about superchargers, but the principles are very similar.Ĭouple uniqe things about super chargers is that their output is determined in part by RPM. Big turbo can make big hp by flowing lots of air, but can be a pain on the street and have lots of lag before the get spooled up. You want a small turbo for quick response and low lag, but they can only flow so much air. Stock turbos tend to designed for certain power vs lag charatistics. The reason the bigger turbo in the Saab gave you more hp at lower boost was due to it the efficienty. The 88 Turbo S and 89 cars came with bigger hot side on the turbos allowing about 30 more hp for the same pressure. Nice thing about 944 Turbo's is that its pretty easy and cheap to add a chip and run boost to 15psi and get 250-280 wheel hp. Pretty good since they were rated at 247 at the flywheel. My 88 Turbo S is 100% Stock and puts 230 hp to the ground.

Submarines of the Civil WarĬonfederates tried their hand at submarines during the Civil War. In 1856 he built Seeteufel (Sea Devil), a 52-foot submarine carefully equipped with a rescue device, for Russia during the Crimean War. After six long hours underwater, the crew was able to flee its doomed vessel. Bauer persuaded his men to let the water flow in, equalizing the pressure inside and outside the submarine to enable the hatch to be opened. Disaster struck when the hull plates sprang a leak, and the ship sank to the bottom and became embedded in mud. With public support, he built Brandtaucher (Fire Diver). A Bavarian artillery engineer, Wilhelm Bauer, devised a plan to utilize submarines to attack the Danish ships. In the 1850s, the Danes were at war with the German states, and the Danish Navy blockaded German ports. In spite of successful trials on the Seine River in Rouen and at Brest, the French Admiralty declined to invest in Fulton’s new technology. The vessel included sails for surface propulsion and enough compressed air to keep a four-man crew underwater for three hours. In 1801, expatriate American designer Robert Fulton, then living in France, demonstrated the copper-hulled Nautilus, the first fish-shaped submersible, which employed a screw to push rather than pull the vessel. Sergeant Ezra Lee, manning Turtle, comes under fire from British sailors after failing to attach explosives to HMS Eagle. Unfortunately for the Americans, he could not drill a hole into Eagle’s copper-reinforced bottom, and the attack failed. On September 6, 1776, Lee set out on the mission. In the end a sergeant in the Continental Army, Ezra Lee, was chosen for the task. Bushnell initially gave the piloting job to his brother, Ezra, but Ezra’s poor health led to the postponement of the plan. To sink the British ship Eagle, Turtle would need to come alongside and fasten a 150-pound bomb to Eagle’s keel with a screw. Bushnell’s Turtle was pressed into service. The ship dove and surfaced by means of brass pumps that took in or expelled seawater as ballast, while using 700 pounds of lead weights that could be played out in 50-foot increments on a line.įollowing the outbreak of the American Revolution, patriots were desperate to strike a blow at British ships blockading New York harbor. Made of oak and covered with pine-tar pitch for waterproofing, Turtle looked more like a beer keg than a modern submarine. Bushnell designed it to be operated by one man and capable of submerging 20 feet deep for up to half an hour. Built in 1775 by Connecticut inventor David Bushnell, the walnut-shaped submersible measured 7 feet high and 5½ feet wide. The first military submarine was Turtle, which made its debut during the American Revolution. There were also reports of Ukrainian Cossacks employing a submersible boat, much like a modern diving bell, that they propelled by walking beneath it on the bottom of the river. Papin reportedly tested a second, oval-shaped vessel on the Lahn River in 1692. When enough air was pumped inside, the operator could open holes in the floor of the sub to let in enough water to float the box. A few years later, French physicist Denis Papin designed and built two submarines consisting of a heavy metallic box and air pump. In 1680, Italian inventor Giovanni Borelli sketched plans for a submarine that could be sunk or raised using goatskins in the hull that were alternately filled or emptied of water by twisting a rod. A German U-2 submarine torpedoes an Allied transport ship in the Atlantic Ocean during World War I.ĭuring the latter years of the 17th century, a number of other European inventors and scientists worked on submarine designs. Despite several successful tests between 16, the Royal Navy eventually lost interest in Drebbel’s invention, and none was commissioned or built. King James I observed the tests, although it is probably apocryphal that the monarch ever made a test dive himself. He tested the submersible in the Thames while working under contract to the British court. A leather-covered, 12-oar rowboat, Drebbel’s craft was reinforced with iron against water pressure to a depth of 15 feet. However, da Vinci refused to reveal his discovery to the world because he feared “the evil nature of men who practice assassination at the bottom of the sea.” The Early Pioneers of Submersible ShipsĪ Dutchman, Cornelis Drebbel, built the first known practical submersible in 1620, using blueprints developed nearly 50 years earlier by English amateur inventor William Bourne, whose plans never got beyond the drawing board. The concept of a ship that could submerge beneath the water and then resurface dates back as far as the late 1400s, when Italian Renaissance artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci claimed to have found a method for a ship to remain submerged for a protracted period of time. Why does content marketing matter for businesses today? Your content marketing blueprint will cover everything from the very top including who your audience is, their pain points and the answers that they’re searching for that your business or brand can help them with, right down to how many social media posts you’ll be posting to your existing audience and what topics those will cover. Taking from your overall content strategy, it outlines what you hope to achieve in the future and how you intend to do it. When it comes to content marketing, a blueprint is a complete plan of all the ways in which you’re going to speak with your audience. It includes where the walls are, the pipe systems, the electricity, ventilation… everything you need to know if you wanted to build the building, demolish the building or even break in and steal the diamonds. What is a blueprint?Ī blueprint, just like those you see on all the spy movies, is a complete map of all the parts that need to be noted about a building or machine. As an advertiser, you can find affiliates to create content that fits within your overall strategy, reaching new and diverse audiences. It’s also worth noting that the content within your content marketing plan doesn’t have to be owned or created directly by you. If your audience assumes you’ll release a video blog every week on Tuesday evening, you need to be consistent with that to retain your audience and build trust with the customer base. Content marketing is also about consistency. Instead of attempting to understand their customers’ wants and needs, they project their own onto their content.ĭo your research when it comes to your customers and audience to truly create content that will serve them and subsequently serve you and your business. Your content marketing is structured and targeted to be relevant and valuable to the audience you’re hoping to attract, too. The definitions are endless, but in short, it’s creating content - whether that be blogs, newsletters, videos, images, infographics, stories and so much more - that help or inform your audience while engaging them. What is content marketing?Ĭontent marketing is undoubtedly a buzz phrase. To use affiliate marketing properly, you should start at the top and create a well-rounded marketing strategy. To spread the word wider and create further pockets of awareness about their brand, business or product, engaging good-quality publishers, also known as affiliates, is a great approach.īut affiliate marketing is just one approach that should always be part of a wider digital marketing strategy. An affiliate merchant is someone who utilizes the wide world of affiliate marketing to broaden their audience and make further sales.Īffiliate merchants, and those looking to become one, know that it’s almost impossible to hit all the sectors of the market merely through their own audience and marketing efforts. If you own or work for a brand or business, this certainly applies to you. What is an affiliate merchant?įirstly, are you an affiliate merchant and does this apply to you? An affiliate merchant is also known as an advertiser, which can also be known as a brand or business. But first, you need to take a look at what it means to be an affiliate merchant and dive deeper into the world of content marketing. What you need is a blueprint, a detailed plan to guide you through and ensure you’re working towards the right goals for your business. People will tell you “content is king” and it certainly is, but coming up with ideas off the cuff about things you think sound good and putting it out randomly isn’t using content marketing to the best of its ability. The earliest version was inspired by the SETI Project, as Wright admitted, "The original concept was sort of a toy galaxy you could fly around and explore." Spore's design documents were published in an issue of Wired in 2004 as a layout portraying the cycle of evolution, unbeknownst to the magazine and the general public at that time. Spore's development began in 2000, around the time that development began for The Sims Online. It feels like it wants to be breaking out into a completely different thing than what Sim was." Wright was inspired by the Drake equation and the 1977 film Powers of Ten when developing Spore. Wright adding it also freed him from the preconceptions another Sim title would have brought, saying ".Not putting 'Sim' in front of it was very refreshing to me. Even though SimEverything was a first choice name for Wright, the title Spore stuck. Spore was originally a working title, suggested by Maxis developer Ocean Quigley, for the game which was first referred to by the general public as SimEverything. Tolkien." During the 2007 Technology Entertainment Design (TED) conference, Wright added that he wanted to create a "toy" for kids to inspire long-term thinking, stating, "I think toys can change the world." History and development Spore was originally conceived as SimEverything in 1994 as seen in this early poster. I wanted them to be like George Lucas or J. Wright said, "I didn't want to make players feel like Luke Skywalker or Frodo Baggins. Spore 's main innovation is the use of procedural generation for many of the components of the game, providing vast scope and open-endedness. The player then begins molding and guiding this species' society, developing it into a space-faring civilization, at which point they can explore the galaxy in a space ship. Eventually, the species becomes sentient. The player molds and guides a species across many generations, growing it from a single-celled organism into a more complex animal. The game has drawn wide attention for its ability to simulate the development of a species on a galactic scope, using its innovation of user-guided evolution via the use of procedural generation for many of the components of the game, providing vast scope and open-ended gameplay. Spore is a video game developed by Maxis and designed by Will Wright, released in September 2008. This letter must be discounted as evidence for early German use of chlorine, however, because the date "2 January 1915" may have been hastily scribbled instead of the intended "2 January 1916," the sort of common typographical error that is often made at the beginning of a new year. It may appear from a feldpost letter of Major Karl von Zingler that the first chlorine gas attack by German forces took place before 2 January 1915: "In other war theatres it does not go better and it has been said that our Chlorine is very effective. In cooperation with Fritz Haber of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin, they began developing methods of discharging chlorine gas against enemy trenches. German chemical companies BASF, Hoechst and Bayer (which formed the IG Farben conglomerate in 1925) had been making chlorine as a by-product of their dye manufacturing. At high concentrations and prolonged exposure it can cause death by asphyxiation. Chlorine is a powerful irritant that can inflict damage to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. The first killing agent was chlorine, used by the German military. Instead of vaporizing, the chemical froze and failed to have the desired effect. The first instance of large-scale use of gas as a weapon was on 31 January 1915, when Germany fired 18,000 artillery shells containing liquid xylyl bromide tear gas on Russian positions on the Rawka River, west of Warsaw during the Battle of Bolimov. 1915: Large-scale use and lethal gases Russian Red Cross nurses tend to gassed Russians brought from the front lines, 1915 None of the combatants considered the use of tear gas to be in conflict with the Hague Treaty of 1899, which specifically prohibited the launching of projectiles containing asphyxiating or poisonous gas. In October 1914, German troops fired fragmentation shells filled with a chemical irritant against British positions at Neuve Chapelle the concentration achieved was so small that it too was barely noticed. As bromine was scarce among the Entente allies, the active ingredient was changed to chloroacetone. The stocks were rapidly consumed and by November a new order was placed by the French military. The small quantities of gas delivered, roughly 19 cm 3 (1.2 cu in) per cartridge, were not even detected by the Germans. During World War I, the French Army was the first to employ tear gas, using 26 mm grenades filled with ethyl bromoacetate in August 1914. The most frequently used chemicals during World War I were tear-inducing irritants rather than fatal or disabling poison. See also: Weapons of World War I 1914: Tear gas Widespread horror and public revulsion at the use of gas and its consequences led to far less use of chemical weapons by combatants during World War II. The use of poison gas by all major belligerents throughout World War I constituted war crimes as its use violated the 1899 Hague Declaration Concerning Asphyxiating Gases and the 1907 Hague Convention on Land Warfare, which prohibited the use of "poison or poisoned weapons" in warfare. The widespread use of these agents of chemical warfare, and wartime advances in the composition of high explosives, gave rise to an occasionally expressed view of World War I as "the chemist's war" and also the era where weapons of mass destruction were created. In the later stages of the war, as the use of gas increased, its overall effectiveness diminished. Gas was unlike most other weapons of the period because it was possible to develop countermeasures, such as gas masks. The killing capacity of gas was limited, with about 90,000 fatalities from a total of 1.3 million casualties caused by gas attacks. This chemical warfare was a major component of the first global war and first total war of the 20th century. The types of weapons employed ranged from disabling chemicals, such as tear gas, to lethal agents like phosgene, chlorine, and mustard gas. They were primarily used to demoralize, injure, and kill entrenched defenders, against whom the indiscriminate and generally very slow-moving or static nature of gas clouds would be most effective. The use of toxic chemicals as weapons dates back thousands of years, but the first large-scale use of chemical weapons was during World War I. In the absence of initial official information, Chinese media and the public used accounts of fellow villagers, Ou’s past social media posts, and previous media reports to piece together an unofficial version of events that could have led to the killings. Many believed Ou was an ordinary man pushed to the brink of despair over a years-long housing dispute. Public sympathy surged further after reports emerged that he had saved a young boy from drowning at sea three decades ago and rescued two dolphins that were nearly stranded in 2008.įor nearly five years, Ou and his family – including his 89-year-old mother – did not have a home, according to Ou’s Weibo posts and Chinese media reports.
